Friday Fun: Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum

Complementing our Cool Job of the Week (Pirate?!), this week’s Friday Fun is all about the pirate’s drink (and phrase) of choice: “Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum”!

First of all, please do not misconstrue posting this song as my endorsement of drinking (underage or otherwise). As you may note from the lyrics, included in this video, the song is actually more about the bloodthirsty, golddigging manner of pirates under the influence. And, as noted in my Cool Job of the Week post, I much prefer those who battle pirates to the pirates themselves. Scurvy scalawags indeed, those rum-soaked pirates!

But, in honor of “Talk Like A Pirate Day,” this tune is most popular this week, and thus is Jolly Rogering the airwaves here at Casa CoolJobs, at least for another two minutes and 45 seconds.

Friday Fun: She Blinded Me With Science

This week’s Friday Fun song has a direct correlation to this week’s Cool Job of the Week: “She Blinded Me With Science“!

This 1982 hit from Thomas Dolby has also been covered by – of all people – William Shatner.

Another fun fact: apparently Dolby created the idea for the music video before he’d even worked out the song! He also directed the video, which features various mad scientists in a Home for Deranged Scientists.

While it’s obvious that not all scientists are mad, as the old saying goes: “You don’t have to be crazy to work here, but it helps!”

Friday Fun: Paperback Writer and the San Diego Festival of Books

Last week’s Friday Fun post featured “9 To 5,” Dolly Parton’s 1980 hit, but this week I’ve got something a little different…

“Paperback Writer” by The Beatles!

This delightfully rockin’ tune is all about a wannabe writer soliciting a publisher to accept his book. While this is just a snippet from the full song (and I strongly encourage you to buy the full-length version), this felt like the perfect way to get me in the mood for the San Diego Festival of Books, which is happening tomorrow (Saturday, August 26) from 10 AM to 6 PM.

It’s the first-ever book festival to take place in San Diego, so I’m super excited about it!

I’ll be posted at the San Diego Writers and Editors Guild table from 10 AM to 12:30 PM, so if you’re in the area please stop by and say hi.
